Migrated to Hong Kong from Pakistan at the age of 9, Shahab Khan did not speak a word of Cantonese or English. Despite the language barrier and difficulties in adapting to a new life in Hong Kong, Shahab overcame the obstacles along the way and has now embarked on a new journey at HKU.
With outstanding results in HKDSE, Shahab was awarded the “Towy Lisle Scholarship”, which eased the financial burdens on his family. Shahab is grateful for all the help he has received from his secondary school, the social workers and NGOs. “I believe that by studying hard, I can climb the social ladder and improve the situation of my family, and I think everyone should have an equal opportunity to pursue their dreams,” said Shahab. Sharing the same cultural background with the ethnic minorities, he understands the difficulties they face. He wishes to give back to society through voluntary work, mental support, mentorship, and the establishment of scholarships in the future.
